Do you ever feel guilty if you are getting to great of a deal on something?

I like to get a good deal and know what I am getting. I was planning on offering my mechanic $350 to install my impeller, bellows seal kit, shift cable, and trim limiters. Though he told me he would do it for $275. I have seen a lot of people quote $800 including parts. I like getting a deal, though I don't like the feeling of taking someone to the cleaners. He winterized my boat last fall for $130 for shrink wrapping it, winterizing the motor and engine fogging. I gave him an extra $10. He seems to really enjoy what he does more than getting money

Nope,

I always believe the best deal in the world is the one that both parties are happy with.

I think I might feel guilty if I wasn't so worried that I was walking into a scam.

That guy is one of a kind, dedicated, and honest. I would pay him more also. People like that deserve a tip. And he will really appreciate your return visits!

I recently had a brace welded on my off road truck )actually it was a fix for a rusted out spot on the frame at the power steering pump) by a guy that does welding on the side. Not just a kit to do this is 70 bucks for the pre-formed bracket. This guy fabbed up every piece, did an EXPERT job on it and considering I was a unannounced, unplanned walk in he charged me 40 bucks for 2 hrs work (total, labor, metal, welding. I told him I had 71 bucks exactly in my wallet and it was all his and I appreciated it. He was happy, I was happy and we BOTH felt like we got a heck of a deal.

NEVER!!!!
Those good deals we think we are getting are actually what they should cost
I like to take my buisness to individuals that work for themselves and take pride in their work and those are usually the best deals, craftmanship and service

My theory is that if the buyer's happy and the seller's happy, it's a good deal.

Generally, I don't feel guilty. In fact, I'm always happy to get a good deal. In a circumstance like yours, where an honest individual has underpriced his work, I will give him a bit extra to thank him for his effort. It goes a long way when you return to have other work done. I had a similar thing happen last year when I had some seat parts repaired.

I live for that "perfect" deal. The one where everyone is happy, and you feel like you just really scored something great. Thats one reason I love to go to auctions, junk stores, yard sales, etc. And I too will overpay if I feel the work was worth more than I was charged. My boat mechanic spent a whole day going over my last project boat for me, and didnt charge me a cent. I brought back a $50 Olive Garden gift card for him and his wife. It just seemed "right". If I even feel halfway guilty (convicted) then I will not do the deal.

Maybe his prices and work ethic are the reason you and countless others return to have more work done. Make the money volume over gouging someone one time.

If you were planning on paying $350, give him the $275 and a generous tip. When you go back for the next job, he'll get right on your work for the right price because you are a satisfied return customer who appreciates a job well done for a fair price.

I do plenty of free work in my shop (usually the little repair jobs where I only have a small amount of time invested) and it always brings return business. I also seem to score a lot of gift cards/bottles of 'appreciation' from customers.

I will send you a couple of bottles of "appreciation" of your choice shipped to your door from here: http://www.vinodelgrotto.com/ in exchange for that bow filler cushion we discussed..........:D

No! once the price is qouted that is it.

When i was in the construction business I helped a friend do a porch on his camp, brought everthing that we needed to do the job with me except cement. Went to the cement plant waited for a cement truck to come back to its shop and had extra cement, loaded up two barrels of cement that they would have thrown away ask if we owed any money, he said no. My friend gave him twenty bucks. When we got into the truck I reemed him out. he didn't want any money and do not ever do that again you make it bad for the rest of us.
