Do you do "trades"?

I'm about to do a fairly large ($4K+) "trade" of items with like value. In my case there should be no dollars involved at all if everything goes off according to plan and I like it because there is no sales tax, etc. involved. I'm curious how many others do the same?

Re: Do you do "trades"?

Depends on what I want, and what I have. Sometimes work is traded for something.

I do a significant amount of trade for services. I've always liked it mainly because my labor cost is basically converting "free time" (sittin' at home at night) to real cash value. I haven't done too many hard trades (like a car for a boat) so I can't speak to that specifically. My company uses a barter service as well for a number of things we use.

...Much easier to beg forgiveness. :)
... speak for yourself, dude ;)

Chances are if you like the value trade then there's no real loss for you if you eventually don't like the bike. You can probably sell it and get the value back out of it - especially if it's rather rare. You obviously don't like the boat, right?

Not like we're talking about a Rolls Royce or anything

Yes I do barter, Bubba. Seems to be the thing around here these days. Works well for me, as I hope the same for you.

I'll only trade UP. Even trades never end up....even...IMO.

The only reason that would make a trade feasible for me...is if I had an item that I couldn't get sold for cash.

I like trading. If you have something I like/want and vise versa, I'll trade. I don't worry about exact value. If we are close, I'm good. Plus, if I trade, my wife could careless.

I love bartering. I've ended up with everything from jewelry to a Jeep, furniture, quads, TV's, tools, etc, etc. I seem to have a knack for finding barter deals somehow. I'll definitely continue to do so...why, did you have something you think I might need? :D

Re: Do you do "trades"?

In this case I'm trading a Winner bass boat, trailer and OB for a rather rare Motorcycle. Both are worth about the same and I want the bike so....

Umm no, I haven't told the admiral about it yet. Best if she comes home one day and finds the bike in the garage. Much easier to beg forgiveness. :)

just curious what kinda bike is it? as i have a rather rare motorcycle. actually 2 rare bikes (same make just different engine size) i have the 1500 wife has the 800 and they are kawasaki drifters however they are not "valuable" yet, but not price deflated either. my 1500 is a 1999 year model. 36000 miles and i have turned down 6 thousand dollars for it. but get regular offers of 4500-5000 or even trade for full dresser harleys, i decline mostly because i just love my bike and its not for sale. sorry to hijack the thread just curious as to what kind of bike?

Grew up in the car business, so, yes, trades are good. I enjoy doing the trade deals.

I trade with friends and acquaintances. Last trade was a 125cc Honda offroad with a cracked tranny case for a 1000w surround sound system. Both were equally noisy and we're happy.

Re: Do you do "trades"?

It's a 87 Kawasaki KZL 1000 Eliminator. From what I've been able to find out Kawasaki imported 2500 of the 1000's and around 300 of the Eliminators. The bike was only brought in for the 87 year before the insurance companies put the brakes on it and Kawasaki "de-tuned" it 88 and then dropped it in 89. Super rare? Not quite but the bike has a large following because, well it will still leave the new "sport bike" folks wondering what happened when the light turned green. :D

One in nice condition actually sells for more now than when it was new.
Had a chance to ride one back then. When the front wheel came off the ground in third gear, I got off the bike, gave it back to my friend and went home to change my underwear.

Re: Do you do "trades"?

I had an '83 KZ1000. Loved that bike. Great, fast, crouch rocket! Had a blast with it. Went way too fast at time on her in my younger years. Then, I got older and wiser ... the constant emergency calls to bike accidents that didn't end well ... and I got home from one particularly gruesome one and put her up for sale. She had 25K on her and I left her go for $1700 ($400 more than I paid for her 23 years earlier).

I miss her. There are times I still want to get on a bike and go for a ride, but about that time the pager goes off and I remember why I am not riding any more.

Not to hijack, but I too had a need for speed way back when. In 1986, I had a 1983 Yamaha Midnight Maxim 750 that was a blast, but my riding buddy had a 1984? Kawasaki GPZ750 turbo that was just amazing and made my bike look like a slug. Glad we survived darting through Manhattan streets and flying down rural windy roads together. : )
