I was looking at some old boat advertisements and noticed that they invariably sport a burgee with the manufacturer's name. This is, of course, completely understandable. However, watching some youtube videos, I have been noticing quite a number of boats with burgee flying.
So that led me to wonder - do you burgee? If so, what does it denote? Pics are always welcome!

Actually I just started flying the burgee that is my avatar. I didn't know what it meant until a few years ago, but one of the boats we had when I was a kid flew that same burgee from the bow light. So, I thought it'd be fun to reprise it.

Of course it means "ya' got skunked" fishing, and I'm on a bow rider with nary a fishin' pole on board - but hey! It's nostalgia :D

I've thought about boating clubs, there's at least one in my area but I haven't made a move to join. Now you have me thinking about it again though.

Only pic of their burgee I could find.

Used to fly a jolly roger on the last boat, but nothing on this one.

<snip>

I hope they aren't like the clubs in my area. I talked to the president of one local club I was considering and told him we are looking for boat-centric activities that didn't involve a bunch of drinking. He told me their club was probably not for us. :eek:hwell:

For those who voted #3 "What the heck is a burgee?":

Technically it's a distinguishing flag that denotes a recreational boating organization. The image below shows some different shapes and their names, but they are all generally referred to as burgees. A purist may split some hairs (and they're technically correct), and as such a flag like I fly (small rectangular signal type) is technically not a "burgee" - though that's what most would call it in recreational boating.

Generally a burgee is the fanion shape with a boat or yacht club's logo on it.

The skunk is not a burgee. If you answered #3, why didn't you just get out the dictionary and find out what it was before you made yourself look dumb. You do own a dictionary, don't you?

The dictionary (or Google) is your friend. If you research words you don't know it will enhance your vocabulary and increase your knowledge. I realize that we are all too lazy to do that when asking a question on the internet is so much easier. Trouble is, if you do the former you may remember it, while the latter will just make you have to do it over again next time.

Uh Okay...

Maybe I won't join the boat club, the dues are 200, I think I could have my own burgee made up. Maybe a custom Starcraft burgee

Serious much Jim?

Anybody want to talk about oil or ethanol?

Did anyone that answered NO, indicate that they didnt look it up after being asked?

Admitting you dont know something when asked, isnt a fault.. Probably harder to do then telling people how smart you are.

About 40 years ago I had this one. After the kids scattered all over the country and I spent 90% of my lake time on my bassboat there was no place to fly it that it would not be in the way. Still have it tucked away in a drawer someplace.

I believe the post directly above yours indicates he did in fact look it up and posted for anyone skimming the thread.

in fact, i was not aware of the different flags not all being called a burgee so i learned something, that i didn't know i didn't know. But what i realize this morning i know i don't know is...............is it a hard or soft g? I'm too lazy to look it up.

CSR is out of stock, apparently, not to mention pricey. It doesn't really do anything for me anyway.

It sounds like 'j'.

What I'm thinking about is having one made (or make it myself) with a fouled anchor and USN retired on it, similar to what I'm using for an avatar.

whaaat? Don't want to be identified as Sea Ray snob form CSR?? :D plus you own a Sea Ray so you must be rich so you can afford it..

I had a 22 SR cuddy for awhile that's when I joined up, then stayed for the Bayliner fun. Haven't been there in a few years.

you know, iboats could sell one, cheap like for a buck or maybe two, since it would be free advertising for them - use the new logo.

I'd also look into window sticker for vehicles. How many 'Salt Life' have you seen on minivans Arizona and states like that?? I just did a quick look and ordering just a few thousand I got pricing from 99 cents to buck and a half each. Slip free into each order over $250 and we'll have an exclusive club and can nod knowingly as we pass each other on the road like all those THT folks in SE FL do. Or sell for $1 each added to any order. Break even on cost and free advertising, bonus it will be helping you with your new branding. Well not free; I'll take my 20% consulting fee...

I'd put on my truck, right next to my Fish Head Cantina Arbutus, MD. Love I miss that place. Only got arrested there once.

Or i'd put on my laptop. I'd be really cool at meetings.
