Do new fuel pumps come with a filter pre loaded

Hi everyone, I just replaced a failing fuel pump in a new to me 1996 Grew Cutter with a 3.0LX Merc (canadian made bowrider). I had another thread about issues with fuel supply after but it seems to have worked itself out. I believe it was a vapour lock.

When I was pumping the fuel through the lines up to the carb with the fuel line disconnected into a container I noticed a lot of material in the fuel. If there was a fuel filter in the fuel pump wouldn't that be catching this material? Or was I sold a fuel pump that didn't have a filter in it. I was told it did by the marine parts store. Before I take it apart I was wondering if anyone knows off hand.

Must be dirty fuel in the tank or maybe a disintegrating fuel line. The fuel line is only 2 feet long however.

Thanks in advance!

If it looks like item 1 then yes open it up and it should be there. With after market it can be a crap shoot

You would do well to install a remote filter/separator, new fuel line and clean up the tank. Might be an additional filter on the pickup tube..

Yes that will work fine.
If you do install the canister filter, remove the one in the pump and have filter before the pump

That was my next question as I thought it might restrict flow too much! thanks again. You guys are awesome.

I'm about to put in the water/fuel separator kit and will be changing the fuel line as well as it's old. I see most people put it before the fuel pump but then I saw a post that says I shouldn't use a 10 micron filter pre pump or it will starve the pump. Says the filter is good for 90gph which should be plenty in my opinion. Can anyone chime in before I begin? Also confirming I should remove the stock filter in the fuel pump as well as to not starve the engine of fuel.

Thanks in advance

!0 micron is what you want and the pump will have no issue with it. Only time it ever will is if it gets clogged up, which hopefully will be a long time

Thanks guys! That's great. I did get the correct fuel line from the local marine parts store and let me tell you I'm still walking funny....

I'll leave take out the second filter and spring out of the new fuel pump as well.

I'm thinking I'll prime the filter with fuel to try to avoid any air/vapour block as well.

Yep their proud of it! A couple of feet will cost you a lunch or two but it also buys you some precious time if things go fubar..
