Do I really have to pay that much for outdrive oil

Guys,
I want to change my outdrive oil in my Volvo Penta SX drive and the dealer I bought it from states I need to use the Volvo synthetic outdrive oil. This stuff is expensive so my question is - is this oil that much better than any other or can I use something a bit more affordable. Also how warm does it have to be to change this oil? Lastly does the replacement have to go from the bottom up or can I fill via the dip stick? TIA for the help.

While it doesn't have to be "Volvo" branded, you do need to use a grade GL-5 synthetic gear lube.

Bottom up to make sure there are no air bubbles, i leave the top off for a hour or 2 to make sure of no air bubbles in all 3 places i got to put gear oil.

Now to the money part, merc makes the best gear oil, really the best, want the best gotta pay for it.

Your gonna save a few bucks now and chance having to spend thousands latter

THINK ABOUT IT !

Thanks guys. I guess I'll stick with the Volvo lube. Any ideas how much the SX outdriver holds? Any good online stores your guys suggest for this?

Does 2.2 quarts sound correct for a SX-M out drive? I've read else where that it is almost 4 quarts but I can't remember where I saw this.

Yes it worked it's just so different from another mantinence manual I read. 2.2 as compared to ~4 quarts.

nope, once its out of warrenty you can use 3 in 1 oil if you wish but it most likly will lead to failure.
the volvo SX requires a GL-5 synthetic of anyones manufacture.
I discourge the use of merc HP gear lube in the SX style drives due to the mud the merc oil creates when the anti- wear additives fall out of solution.
you barvo guys that dont believe look in the bottom of your remote oil resevoirs.
the sx takes roughly 72 ounces just under 2.5QTs.
DO NOT overfill.
carefully check the dipstick when dding the last 5 ounces.
a volvo cone clutch unit that is overfilled may experience engine flare up on acceleration then sudden gear lock up and possibly tossing the upper driven shaft out of the top cover.
I usually fill mine from the top but then I have been doing this 30 years or so and have developed a few tricks over the years to beat the flat rate manual.
for novice users buy the pump and fill it from the bottom to the mid point on the dipstick carefully measuring the amount pumped.
I shoot for the mid point to allow for thermal expnsion but thats me.
only issue changing drive oil in the cold is it takes longer to drain, its also why the above on refilling to the center of the dipstick not the absolute full part.

FYI I was just at Wally World and they have Quicksilver High Performance outdrive fluid for $9.67 a quart vs $16+ at the stealership, and the changing pump for $6.
