Hey Folks, this may be a dumb question so if it is feel free to flame me.

I have a 30hp evinrude and I am thinking about removing the neutral cut off switch in the control box. Is this a bad idea even if I am careful not to start the motor in gear?

Thanks all

I know you realize that is in there as a safety feature. What I don't understand is why you would want to take it out??

It only takes one accident to ruin your day.

Usually that switch simply needs adjusting. And yes, it's a bad idea to bypass it. You may be carefull BUT nobody is careful forever. Eventually you'll start the engine in gear at full throttle.... should be exciting!

Yeah I know its stupid. I got a set of used controls and its switch was not working so I wanted to know besides the safety thing if it was ok.

what kinds of adjusting can you do to this?

Use an ohmeter to check the switch for continuity when in neutral. Maybe it's no good.

The neutral safety switch within the control box is closed by a protruding portion of the throttle cam pushing against the switch plunger.

The adjustment is simply loosening the switch screws and pushing the switch closer to the cam. You'll understand as soon as you look at it.

Can't tell ya how many times it's kept me from starting the motor in gear - if it's not functional, most switches can be disassembled, cleaned up and put back together.
