I have a 1985 bayliner capri with a 125B volvo/penta and a 270 outdrive. I was reading some past postings and noticed that some folks were looking for exhaust flappers. Mine is gone and was like that when I bought it in the spring...volvo wants a small fortune for one and I would like to know if there are after market flappers available or other options. I would also like to know the purpose of it and is it important to have it on the boat? May be a dumb question but since I don't knwo the answer I am asking. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Michael
zakiah7

Had the same problem with my outdrive, I don't know what the true purpose of this little piece does but the dealer wanted $110.00 for the whole nose piece which included the rubber flapper,so I went to a junk yard and got a piece of rubber close to the same thickness and cut it to size works just as good and didn't even cost me anything for the rubber.

the reason for the exhaust flapper is to keep water from entering the motor thur the exhaust when a wave comes from behind the boat it pushes againist the flapper they arent cheap but better than getting water in the motor

That flapper can be very important if you launch on a steep ramp ,moor in often rough conditions,or in any circumstance that might allow water to enter backwards into the engine. Here's the rub.Volvo ,not long ago did away with the external flappers on the snouts of the drives and put them into the exhaust bellows. You will need to determine if that is where you are.If you have the new bellows, good, if not, get it.
