IMHO, Never buy an extended warranty during your lifetime and you will be way ahead when they put you in the ground.

The seller preys on your fear that something WILL go wrong. They are a highly profitable item for the seller.

AMEN Ratfish! If something is going to break because of defect, it typically (not always) will break within the timeframe of manufacturers warranty. If it breaks after that, they will find some reason, trust me they will, not to cover it. Ask anyone who has had one...
Warranties make the biggest profit for these guys. Many will budge on price in negotiation if they know you will buy warranty.

My dad told me when I was young-" son, never buy an extended warranty on ANYTHING, EXCEPT a washing machine. Anything that mixes water, electricity, and a woman needs to be covered!"

Not to mention, most things that break will be less than $800...

well 50 percent of auto ext warranty cost is profit for the seller so a 800 dollar warr is really a 400 dollar warr ,what do you get for 400, a false sense of security ,jet ski warr is probably the same thing, get one that says no fault dont care why ,etc the saving clause on the warranty is ,will not cover water ingestion or abuse ,thats what breaks everything abuse and water ingestion, take the 800 and place it in a savings acct when you need something fixed take out some money, at least you will get your money's worth.the only warranty that has impressed me was free, from S B T, I purchased a crank it had a 90 day warr, they extended the warr to 12 months free gift, just before the ext warr ran out the crank dropped a berring, it was due to a faulty oil pump not the fault of sbt. they let me apply the price of the crank toward a rebuilt engine, they certainly did not have any obligation to do that, but they did. I put in the new engine and after the break in i notice it has a problem getting over 6200 rpm, runs ok otherwise, I notice oil has been leaking from the rave valves, i look and notice both raves are broken where the bellows connects so the raves were not working, I call sbt they replace everything not just the broken part, free without any problem, awsome if you ask me, they own that engine for 12 months and as i wear them out, 7 in the last 12 months that makes me really comfortable.so whats the saying about the best warrainies in life are free LOL. save your money

Your best warranty is common sense, good maintenance and not letting your friends go out and flood it with water, roll it over or tear it up.

Save your $$$$$

An extended service plan (warranties are not extendable, by law) can be a good item IF the plan is offered by the OEM themselves and not an independent insurance company. READ CAREFULLY.

The so called "extended warranties" offered by some outboard manufacturers are not extended warranties at all. They are extended service plans. Extended service plans are indeed nothing more than breakdown insurance policies. Big difference.

Again, it makes all the difference in the world, as to who is underwriting them. The OEM has a vested interest in your satisfaction. An insurance company does not.

Typically, I would not pay more than 10-15% of the total cost of the machine for an extended service plan.

Extended service plans are actually a loser, in the long run, for the entities that write them. They do, however, offer some benefits for the seller.

1. Upfront cash flow.

2. Owners who purchase them tend to be more loyal/repeat customers.

PWC's can be troublesome.
