Do I need a new slave solenoid?

1988 5.7 merc alpha 1.<br /><br />Turn the key and... only a click from the slave solenoid. Starter is good, and I can crank the engine by jumping the two terminals on top of the slave solenoid. I did the tests outlined in DonS's troubleshooting post and I thought I determined that there was a bad ground. Took a new wire and made a direct ground connection to the neg battery post and still no go.<br /><br />Just about to order a new slave solenoid, and wanted to double check my diagnosis.<br /><br />thanks,<br /><br />nat

Bad ground at the slave solenoid that is.. I may have been unclear.

Does sound like the solenoid is gone and needs replacement.
