Do I need a new crankshaft?

1993 SeaDoo Sp 587 white has been smoking and getting progressively worse over the last two years. the smoking happens mostly when it started after sitting for a week or two. Now, it will start but dies after a few seconds and an "oil"? ring forms in the water behind it, probably from the exhaust. Could the rotary shaft oil seal be causing this, or is the labyrinth on the crankshaft shot???? Thanks for any advice!!!

I would check the oil pump. The cable may of come off or be loose and the oil pump defaults to WOT setting. other than that Check compression. Are you loosing oil at a fast rate? 2 strokes tend to smoke. Sea doos dont smoke as much as others but I woudl check the oil pump there is a cable on a wheel that goes from the oil pump to the carb linkage. as you pull the throttle it pulls the oil pump wheel. Also you may need to adjust the oil pump. Something that should be checked and done pre season and checked periodically

Re: Do I need a new crankshaft?

that is a common problem with rotary valve compartments leaking oil it to the crank case, sometimes it is the rotary seal, sometimes it is the crank seals on either side of the rotary valve compartment and sometimes it is the mating surfaces of the 2 crank case halves themselves, you can't do the rotary valve seal without splitting the cases and if you do that you may as well replace the crank too because there isn't any way to tell what is leaking. it will usually burn off the oil and kill the local mosquito population, then run for the rest of the day without smoking but be carefull when the oil is in the case before it burns off it will bring up the compression and it can cause a ring to snag a port if you run it hard before burning off the oil.
