Im putting a new lower end seal kit in my Johnson 18hp fd-19. I pulled out the old seal below the waterpump and it was about twice the thickness of the new seals (Sierra). I measured and it looks like both seals would fit in. What should I do? Thanks.

yes..put the seals "back to back"..put the first seal in just like they are sitting in the pic...flip the second seal over and put it in...I use lots of grease around the seals and inbetween the seals.

The idea is one seal keeps the oil from leaking out, and the other keeps water from getting in.

Also what kind of sealant should I use when I put it back together?

I use Permatex #2 on the skeg. I apply it in the groove where the spaghetti seal goes, then on top of the spaghetti seal. Also apply to the propshaft seal bushing, and on all the skeg bolts.
