I have a 1988 Yamaha outboard 2 stroke (of course) with no compression in 1 cylinder, do I have to rebuild the whole engine? or can 1 cyl be fixed?

you need to find out what all is wrong with the motor and what caused it, then fix what you find

+1 on above. Find the problem and fix it properly--rebuild it all. There are relatively few moving parts in these motors--pistons with rings and crankshafts. Check out the reeds, as they can cause a loss of compression.

Hopefully it's not that expensive of a job.

You did not say what size motor. If it is a 90, you are in luck. Anything smaller than that you may have problems if you require more than a piston replacement. Once you open it up you will find that you can not remove the connecting rods. They are 1 piece and are on a pressed together crankshaft. Very expensive to have it taken apart and then pressed together again. Did it once, was not worth it. Also, when you take it apart, do not become over enthuastic and remove any bolts you dont have to. Dont be surprised if you break off a few bolts, makes things more interesting and can turn the power head into a nice anchor. Then you can make the motor into a neat mail box. good luck! FRED
