It may be, that on your boat, if the other instruments have a common circuit and that there is a separate fuse protecting the gauges. If that's the case, pick 12V off any of the 12V terminals on any other gauge. To answer your question though -- it won't hurt anything and saves you the trouble of determining how your other instruments are or are not protected.
