Do i do anything else?

I have a 1999 Johnson 200 hp outboard. This past week took it out and it wouldn't start, then i promptly floaded it. After an hour or so got it started but it would hesitate bad. Noticed gas driping out of the front of it so took off the carb vent cover and noticed it was full of gas. I was told i had a stuck float so i drained the float bowl and tried again. It ran perfect the first time, but when i came to idle and tried to punch it again it hesitated and bogged down. Once I got it up on plane it ran fine until i went down to the lower speeds again. And i noticed gas leaking again.<br /><br />So i did the same process again, but this time tapped on the float bowl. The next day had no problems and no gas leak.<br /><br />Do you think i need to do anything else or have i solved the problem?

Here's the deal. Tapping on the float bowl freed the sticky needle, but it's not a permanent fix, by any means. <br /><br />It will happen again, so you need to replace the needle and seat. That should cure it permanently.

It could just be a little bit of grit in the float bowl from some dirty petrol. I'd definitely drop the carb bowl and give it a thorough clean out. It's surprising just how much crud can collect in there. You may well find the float valve and seat are still perfectly serviceable afterwards.<br /><br />Cheers<br />Gary

I would also install a inline fuel filter. <br />Preventive maintenance.

The last three times i was out before i started having problems was on a no wake lake. Over a month and a half it was idle speed only and it sat for about three weeks after that. I wonder if by running it at idle speed and letting it sit afterwards helped contribute to the problem?
