Here we go again. A bud of mine told me that ms-nbc had a special on whether or not fish have feelings. Seems that peta has determined that indeed they do and that all folks who fish must stop because we cause them to suffer...oh boy...
I was wondering what they would come up with next and lo and behold.....just when you thought they were weird they seem to get weirder

Do you think it really matters, Gonfishn?

I am satisfied that Muskys get madder than a hornet when hooked, but I never asked if it hurts.

We need someone to advise those PETA folks that plants have feelings, too, for crying out loud. At least we release muskys after our confrontations.

What do those people eat, anyway??

Just read an article about a scientific study of fish's nervous systems that indicate that they don't feel pain in the sense that mammals do. Agree that it won't make any difference to PETA. They have an agenda and won't let it be confused by facts. I liked what the pro tounament fisherman said when the PETA people were beating bamboo poles in the water to protest fishing-- "Huh! They ain't never gone catch nothing like that!"

Re: Do fish feel pain??

i can't get caught up in this one too far, but i did read the articles on fish-pain. also the links to other professional research. and the one that peta pushed listed fish rubbing their mouth against the wall after getting acid/hot spice type chemicals on their lips. the link that disputed it also mentioned that this symptom may not be a pain reflex, but desire to get sensitivity back... i'm just trying to recall the points.

either way, both strong points. as for myself, like i said a yr or so ago... when everyone else on earth becomes vegetarian, then i'll go along. as long as i can legally eat meat, i will. i was born with incisors, for the peta who don't believe in god. otherwise, i am born a man, here to sacrifice meat & plants for my own nourishment ;)

if peta had such a believable creed, why haven't they been made to control all government wildlife resources & forestry divisions? duh

they seem to be on the verge of joining our list of terrorist organizations. and i won't be crying for them either. ok i'm done venting :)

Ever notice how a clean cut hurts less than a jagged cut? I don't know if fish feel pain but for there sake sharpen your fillet knives just in case. If your knifes are dull crack them on the head first so they don't know whats comin just in case they have rational thought also.

Re: Do fish feel pain??

When up north i have my favorite bonker log that dispatches my favorite fins quickly. After that remains are given to my bear friend as a sacrifice hoping he will stay out of my boat..

Most of my fins are put in the live well except for one species and that is the warrior of all fresh water fins. I have a cradle that allows me to catch gator eyes and release them without bringing her out of the water.

I am still lookn for that 50 inch plus and when that happens I will gently tow her to shore while she is attached to my anchor rope.....from there she will see my wall after being mounted......

Re: Do fish feel pain??

The scientific answer to this is yes and no. Yes fish feel pain but they don't feel it like we do. Aside from being a cold blooded animal (which means an entirely different nervous system setup) they also don't have the brain size/capacity like we do. What this means is the fish can not perceive pain in the way we do. Yes being stuck with a fishhook hurts but not like it does to a mind that is capable of rational thought rather than instinctive behavior. A little more on the fish's nervous system here also helps bring all this into perspective. A fish is a primitive animal compared to other animals. The nervous system of a fish is still active even after the animal is dead. Many things that fish do are controlled by autonomous nerves that are independent of the actual brain. breathing being the number one example. How many of you have seen fish still working gills and such even after being filleted, gutted and even the head being removed? The animal is dead but the automatic reactions carry on for a while. The more primitive the fish the longer this occurs. Ice-Age fish such as trout cease functions much sooner than more primitive fish such as catfish or others like gar. All this to me proves that fish do not feel things like we do and perhaps they don't feel at all but rather react to stimulus based on instinctual responses.

Re: Do fish feel pain??

We had a good day of fishing a couple weeks ago and I asked each fish how he or she felt when they got to boat. They all said the fight of getting to the boat was the biggest thrill they had had in a long time. They all said that they were looking forward to the next fight. So I don't care what PETA thinks. I have spend a lot of money and enjoy myself when fishing. If they want me to give up fishing they will have to buy all my equipment and pay TOP DOLLAR to get it.

I think PETA has taken up sponsorship status for "noodling". No Hooks, just a backwoods redneck and his bare hands !!! For those who don't know about noodling, go here: http://www.okienoodling.com/

Those guys are CRAZY !!!

Noodling is dangerous. Takes a tough person to noodle. Toughest people around are Okies. Just figures, eh? Living in Tulsa, but a west coast native, I only noodle for trail mix in the cabinet above the oven.

However, this last fishing trip, girlfriend rammed a striper hook in her forearm. She BRAVELY tried to push it through. Wound up at the local hospital ER.

After that we felt a little different about the fish we pulling in, the minnows hooked through the head, even the worms pinched in half. For, oh, about 20 minutes.

Fact is, the joy of fishing comes at the cost of some other animals suffering or life. We own it. Bobberhead

Re: Do fish feel pain??

hey salty...we here in hot springs, arkansas love a day out on the lake "noodling" You need to try it before you knock it. I only have on suggestion....you should have a little weight and size to ya, I have pulled a 97lb cat out a hole along a big dropoff at lake ouchita. once you do it, you will never use a pole again to catch catfish! There are some real dangers you need to watch out for. but, you could get run over crossing the street too.

suzuki40
