The best I can tell ya DR, is that Yanks always strive to keep their own body count down, in battle! :p

I sure as heck would not want to do a round with these brutes, armor or not.

Re: Do Australians, Kiwis and Brits watch SuperBowl?

most of us don't watch it. it's like the world series base ball.... We don't play in it, europe doesn't play in it, africa doesn't play in it, so it is really the north american series. any way, mostly we watch cricket, NRL and AFL. (National Rugby League, and Australian rules Football League). As far as armour goes, the american football players do wear way too much.
Our guys hardely ever get seriously injured, only the occasional concusion, or boken bone. If you learn how to tackle right, it's pretty safe.

Yeah, yeah, yeah! We already know how civilized you guys are. Learned that in the firearm thread a while back. :p

The surgeons who specialise in knee and shoulder reconstructions might disagree with you I think.

Aldo

I'm South African and I love American football. Learnt the basic's and most the rules, enough for me to understand and enjoy, whilst living in the U.K. BBC /ITV ? presented a 3 month education program leading up to superbowl featuring a game every weekend. The only problem is that to watch it live in S.A. you have to be up at 01:00 which is a bit rough as work starts about 3 hours after completion.

Had no spare tape this time so will have to catch the highlights.

Sorry to say to my colonial cousins that I HATE the hype of the Superbowl... it grates on my somewhat simplistic nervous system. It looks like a game made up by unfit thugs. Give me cricket anytime! :p

G,Day, Yeah, Im with Triton, I sat through a game of gridiron once but got bored with the many stopages, with Aussie rules the game is non stop for 4 x 25 Min quarters. The best game however is Rugby union. for protection just a truss for the crown jewels and a piece of plastic for the teeth.

Your game has too many interruptions for our tastes.

But it is fun seeing 300lb gorillas in helmets and armour who can do 100 yards in even time run into each other. It's even better when they run into unprotected people on the sidelines and knock lots of them over.

If you want to see video of our Aussie Rules code, go here and click on Audio and Video on the left sidebar: http://afl.com.au/

It's probably about as foreign to you as your game is to us although there are Yanks playing Aussie Rules in the US: http://www.usfooty.com/usfooty/

Rugby now that is FOOTBALL!
Had a running partner (drinking, chasing skirts, etc) in Korea and he is a Rugby BUM! Belonged to a loose network of a team that played in Europe several times a year made up from people all over the planet.
Haven't seen him in 20 years but if we were to meet in a hardware store tomorrow the first thing we would do is BUTT Heads then do a hug if we were both still standing. LOL :D

When I was in Thailand, it was on live. So was many of the Monday night football games.

But really nobody watches it.

Most popular by far in that country is soccer.

Funny you guys dont like the stoppages, that is a good thing to me. Gives you a chance for a bathroom break. ;)

Ken

Yeah, why would you want a stoppage in a cricket game? It only lasts several days.

My Dad was originally from London. He loathes American "Football". He just doesn't get it. I wish he could see the light and understand what he's missing... a real man's sport. Then again, he loves golf. I think golf is about a bunch of overdressed pompous pansies chasing around a little ball... to each his own I guess.

The game has gained popularity here since Janets wardrobe malfunction!

Yeuk... now that was a sight we'd rather not have seen! Reckon the game's lost popularity because of it. Now if it'd been Britney - different story. :p

Now this is just a guess but I'm assuming the average rugby player is nowhere near the size of the average nfl player. The bigger/stronger/faster these guys get the more pads are a requirement during gameplay.

but no doubt those rugby guys are tough hombre's.

-Mike
