so here is the scenario. I would like to take a Canadian fishing trip. would prefer not to employ a guide for several reasons. Not the least of which is cost. Would like to take my own boat or canoe. would like it to be a drive in trip. I live in southern WI. Would like to fish for Musky, Northern, Bass etc.

any recommendations as to: City/place, Lake, Gear, place to stay/camp, other attractions?

I would like it to be able to complete the trip in one week maybe two.

Any special considerations for border crossing?

There are many places along the east side of Lake Huron (Georgian Bay) that meet your criteria. Byng Inlet, Point au Baril, Moon River Basin, French River and more. Musky in the 40- 50 lb range are not uncommon. I haven't fished that area for a while but as I remember, we always got our fill of pike, bass and walleye.
There is no shortage of motels and outfitters around. PM me if you want me to dig up more info.

Eagle Lake, Canadian side of Lake of the Woods.... Don't forget your passport. Always say, "yes sir, no sir", "yes ma'am, no ma'am"......

Re: DIY anadian fishing trip questions

I've been up there over a dozen times, my parents have made summer trips at least 50 times for weeks at a time.

HAve been to Eagle Lake several times with good results. Big water, lots of fish.

LAst year we started going to Lac des Mille at Upsala Ontario.

Northern, walleye, and small mouth lake, no musky.
Cabins were all refurbished 2 years ago, but the 3 person cabins are pretty tiny.
Nice furnished kitchens, but we always pack a box of kitchen essentials such as
a really good frying pan, some utensils and a good can opener.

The lake is huge, but the end we are on is mostly small bays, lots of islands, not much more than a mile between shores in most spots, so wave action is minimal and may be good for your canoe.

Zoom in on the map until you start seeing the landmark symbols.
Lac des Mille Lodge is in the far NW corner of the lake.

It is 2 hours west of Thunder Bay, then 8 miles off the highway.

Lac Des Mille Lodge & Resort
Only 300 miles from Duluth, 700 miles from Milwaukee. 500 miles fro Medford :) .

There is NO fancy lodge or restaurant.
They have a little store for basics, sell a few beers and ice cream, and have a coffee room to share stories in.
They have a nice fish cleaning house.
THey have docks for your boat (not free) but there is electric on the dock to charge your batteries..
They do a potluck dinner/fishfry midweek, you provide fish and a dish to pass, they cook and serve.

They have a couple small motel rooms with mini kitchens.
Also, 12 cabins that sleep 3-12 people. Beds are twin mattresses in bunk frames.

Cost, amazingly cheap compared to many places we have been.
$310 per person, plus minnows, docking, and tax. Bill was $1250 for 3 people.
Gas in Canada is $1 more per gallon.

They do a 7 night week. Saturday check-in, Saturday check-out.
(Many places only give you 6 nights. )

If you want muskies, you need to go south, or west.

Rules for crossing the border:
passport or passcard ($65) is required now
Have proof of valid auto insurance for Canada, from your insurance company.
If anyone in your party has an dwi, is behind on their child support, or has criminal conviction,
they need to get approval to enter Canada, start the process now for next summer.

To avoid hassles, take only dry good across the border, no fresh fruit or veggies, night crawlers, or meat, not even canned meat.
Plan your trip to stop and get beer or tobacco at the border duty free.
When crossing the border, have all windows open, and have everyones id in your hand when you pull up to the window.
Then drive to town, get some fresh groceries, gas, and your license, and head to your resort. Stop and get leaches on the way, if you want them.

When grocery shopping, don't look at the prices. Pork - cheap. Beef - expensive.
Fresh juices - expensive.

Not much to see or do on the way. The North Shore of Superior is nice.
Once in Canada, Kakabeka Falls is a nice place to see water falls, if you have time.

There is an Indian casino in MN, just south of the border.

I can recommend a nice motel near the border. And a grocery store in Thunder Bay.

Many Canadian resorts do not allow pets, or will charge a hefty fee.

And make sure your boat plug is removed when passing through Minnesota.

Boating rules and regs are similar to here, http://boating.ncf.ca/equipment.html

Angle Outpost on Lake Of The Woods. You will multiply your success if you take a guide on the first day.

Re: DIY anadian fishing trip questions

Looks like there is some good fishing feedback and info here from the guys....so that probably won't be much of an issue.
The border is a piece of cake....just keep with a few basic rules:
1) No guns
2) You will need a passport and a valid drivers license helps as a 'back up'
3) Make sure you have ownership paperwork for your boat/trailer
4) No guns

Have you travelled to Canada before? (....for the better part, you will generally notice very little difference in many/most areas...except gas prices and road signs- LOL)

Re: DIY anadian fishing trip questions

wow thanks for the info guys. Especially you Roscoe, very detailed write up.

ok so I have never been to Canada, knew about the guns, wondered about food and what not (thanks),knew about passport.

next question, one of us has a misdemeanor conv 22 years ago (does that matter I know it does for commercial driving), another one has a felony conviction that was pardoned completely. any issues?

Re: DIY anadian fishing trip questions

Avenger...here is some good info from the Canada Border Services Website....lots of helpful stuff...check it out:
Non-Canadians
As always, just play straight with the border folks...no stories and no joking around..and definitely no gun jokes or you will be enjoying 6-8 hrs of repacking your car (or truck) in the middle of the parking lot....LOL.
Oh yeah, don't forget to enquire about fishing licenses etc....you can usually pick them up locally at any sporting good shop....good for a couple of weeks I think.
I've never had any issues heading south across the line or back again and I always declare what I'm taking down and bringing back. I think they are checking more for honesty in the questions than in the content of you might have on you in the way of beer, money, etc.
My two bits, and keep us posted on the plans unfold.
All Good

If you go to the Northwest Angle be sure to get a Border Crossing Permit. Angle Outpost can furnish.

Re: DIY anadian fishing trip questions

Ontario sells 2 licenses, 8 day, and annual.
If you are going back across the border within a week, and 8 day is ok.
But if you are going to take your time and site see, remember you have to be back across the border with your catch before the license expires. You can bring one limit back, per person. 50 years ago, things were........ different.

You can also get either a "conservation" license, or a "sportsman" license.
Conservation allows you 2 walleye, 2 northern, per day.
Sportsman permits you 4 walleye, 4 northern, per day.

Here is where the fun begins.

Some lakes have special bag limits, some have slot limits.
THere are different fishery management zones. Zone 5, Lake of the Woods, Dryden, Vermillion Bay area, some lakes have more restrictive regs right now.

Zone 6, where we go now, has lifted many of the slot limits. It rarely matters, we catch and release far more fish than we keep.

We always get the sportsman, as it allows you to put a few fish in the freezer to take home, and still keep fishing for the big one, and daily meals.

Remember, any fish you keep and eat, counts as part of your daily limit.
The rangers will try to trip you up, asking how your shore lunch was.
If you say you had a couple walleyes for lunch, and you have your limit in the cooler when they check you, you will get a ticket.

When they ask about weapons at the border, I always answer no, just my filet knives.

They will also ask if you are leaving, or have left anything in Canada. Don't leave anything in Canada.

On the US side, they will ask if you bought anything in Canada that you are bringing back with you. Be honest, most things are fine, somethings may require you fill out a form.

An old misdemeanor rap should be ok, felony conviction/pardon, don't know.
The key is to inquire now, and get the ball rolling, during the off season.

Here is a video that explains it, clear as mud.

If your willing to drive a bit more more, northern Saskatchewan has some incredible fishing and solitude.
I consider it amoung the best.
