I just bought this boat it has a omc outdrive and a 3.0 L 4cylinder motor it has no spark and the engine won't turn over unless you jump the starter solenoid there is a purple and white wire off by the starter solenoid but I've tried it on both the small terminals and it doesn't help does any one know were I can get a wiring diagram for the starter and ignition circuits

The last two numbers stamped in the hull are 88 I don't have the paperwork yet so I don't remember if it was 88 or 89

Thank You for the diagram I've built Harleys and race cars my whole life but I'm knew to boats could you tell me what the ESA is and what the over stroke switch and the interrupter switch do will the keep it from having spark I was told the boat was running fine and it lost spark they put in a new coil, points and condenser also the starter was replaced. there is no power at the ignition switch but all the acc. work like the trim blower lights.

Re: Dixie bandit 170

the ESA stumbles the ignition when you shift out of gear (and often in to gear too if you have a heavy stainless prop). The gears in the lower unit have a design that locks tighter and tighter as more load is applied. That can make them hard to disengage. So the stumble of the engine is timed through the linkage to briefly unload the gear teeth. As the cable is tugged to a certain tension, the switch is tripped, activating the module.

Is there a safety lanyard switch on the dash of your boat?

I bought this boat I was told it was running and then lost spark I fixed the electrical problems I have good spark now but it still wont start It will cough through the carburetor some times catching fire I'm thinking timing I check the firing order and point and plug gaps everything is right I don't know if the distributor has been out or not can any one give me the correct timing. And the orientation of the distributor I want to make sure number one spark plug wire is started in the right place on it Sorry its a 3.0 OMC

Dixie Boat won,t start

Dixie Boat won,t start

I have a 1988 Dixie Bandit 170 3.0 OMC and it won't start itll back fire through the carb and catch fire but that's it The points and condenser are new as are the plugs it has good spark on each spark plug I don't know about the timing but it looks good checking the rotor position and the timing mark (I don't have a timing light) It has a half a tank of gas that has been in there for two years. I'm thinking ether the timing is off some where or bad gas I'm not sure how to drain that tank or how many gallons are in a half a tank any body has any thoughts on what might be wrong Thank you for the help

Ayuh,.... Sounds like the distributor is 180? out,....

I believe firin' order is 1,3,4,2.... settin' the points to .016" will get it started,...

Set 'em by dwell after that,...
