Divers down!

Well this happened several years, if not a decade ago.
But I felt it was well worth telling here.

My brother in law ran a landscaping co.
and one of his contracts was mowing the boat ramp
access areas at one of the local lakes.
We had decided before hand that I would go with him
on this day, and we were going to just stay at the lake and camp
overnight and fish and whatnot.
Upon arriving at this particular boat ramp,
right away we noticed the Fire Dept, Police, and backed
up to the boat ramp was one of those huge wreckers
the kind that they use to tow 18 wheelers.
I spotted the diver buoy flag floating in the lake not
far from the boat ramp and immediately expected the,
worst, that someone had drowned.
It was not until I saw the winch cable running into the lake,
that I immediately started to grasp what had happened.
It was only a few minutes and a diver surfaced and instructed
the tow truck driver to start winching.
Slowly, the top cab of a pick-up started to surface, along with the front,
to my amazement there was another diver standing in the bed of the
truck holding onto the roof as it surfaced.
Then the front of the boat surfaced, and it all became too clear.

In his haste the guy apparently failed to release the winch, and according
to the fireman I was now in conversation with failed to even take the tie down straps off the back of the boat!
According to the fireman an eyewitness said he was cursing and kept getting out of the boat and backing the truck deeper down the ramp frustrated as to why the boat wouldn't come off the trailer, until finally at WOT in reverse
he managed to pull boat, truck, trailer and all into the lake!

Re: Divers down!

About 30 or so years ago I came into the launch area after dark from a days fishing. I noticed two boats around 15 yds from the ramp and an eerie light glow in the water and at first thought there were using crappie lights and fishing. When I got closer I realized one of the boats belonged to a buddy of mine and the glow was from two truck headlights about 8 feet below the water. After dropping a chain with a hook we managed to hook onto the front bumper of the truck and with one pickup on the ramp and my pickup with slide in camper at the top of the ramp with another chain we managed to pull it up far enough to secure a better hook with the chain and we then retrieved the whole rig.

He was driving a mid 60s Ford pickup and left it idle on the ramp in park and did not set the parking brake. You older salts may remember these transmissions were know for jumping out of park.

The irony of the whole thing was my buddies occupation. He was the service manager for the local Ford dealership.

Yeah, this guy had a fairly new full size Chevy crew cab,
And the poor boat was an absolutely new Ranger 20' with a Merc 225!

Re: Divers down!

About 12 years ago, I thought I was going to have the same story. I had an old '77 Ford truck and towed a buddies boat to the ramp. After a day of fishing, I was winching the boat onto the trailer standing on the tongue and suddenly wondered why my feet were wet. As I was turning the winch, I was slowly pulling the truck down into the water. I went to the truck and noticed that it was not quite all the wat into park. It was a 4 wheel drive with real meaty tires (it was a phase back then. I'm better now!). I honestly believe that if it had smoother tires, it would have just rolled quickly into the water. I never had that problem again, but you can believe I sure checked to see I was in park fully before I got out after that.

At the NorthLake ramp-a small power plant lake in Irving ,TX (DFW) a guy was launching and drowned in his submerged vehicle -It was in the late 1980's or early 1990's-I do not remember details. Other th:eek:an the electric windows were up and the rear wheels could not get traction and the whole thing slid backwards underwater.

Wow, that's why I left out the details of what i witnessed,
to "protect the innocent" as some of the movies/tv programs
always have that disclaimer.
Never know, the poor guy may be a member here!
If so, I feel your pain bud, but I'll never forget the look
on my bro in law's face when that truck surfaced
with the diver's head poking out over the roof...

New Chevy truck......... $20k
New Ranger Bass Boat...$30k
The look on my Brother in Law's Face
when the diver surfaced...Priceless!!!

It was one of those days that,
I absolutely wish I had a camera.
