Learning and Educating should be perpetual. Learn everything you can about your passion to the point you are a subject matter expert, and then teach about what you've learned and call it success!

If any part of that process fails, stick your finger out and blame it on the other guy. :D

Re: Disturbing - What to do now?

I'm no fan of public schooling, and I hate defending them, but a good friend of mine went to a private college because academically she couldn't get into the public schools. They took a nice pile of cash from her at the private college too, more than at the public equivalent.

The big push in schools around here is to "close the learning gap," because that's good for funding and looks good in ratings that people seem to think are oh so important. unfortunately some people will never do well academically no matter how much attention they are given. Reaching equality therefore requires them to squash the higher achievers.

I finished High School in 11 years, my half brother in 14 years. We have both made good lives and careers because we were ready for them.

uuuuuh......

oh never mind, probably don't need a timeout this month.....

Re-read JB's post, think about it for a minute, and I'm sure you'll realise what he is saying.
Makes perfect sense. :)

Not only that, but by necessity it has to ignore WHY someone is not achieving. It might be out of pure laziness, in which case the person needs to be admonished or suffer the consequences of being lazy.

HOWEVER, it can also be that one is not suited to common classroom instruction, or to academics in the abstract sense (think of highly mechanical inventor types). This type of person might be HIGHLY intelligent, but has to be hammered into a mold they don't really fit.

Like JB said, the "one-size-fits-all" approach doesn't cover the spectrum well.

imho, the last two gens of kids ( 5 year olds and 18 year olds) are totally out of the loop on real world stuff. its a point and click world now, no reason to actually use the grey matter anymore. calculators, and spell check rules the education system. its to easy for the kids, and to convienient for the teachers. what ever happened to books and reading? and pencils and erasers??

How about you repeat the class until you learn the material and we don't care whether you feel good or not.

It worked when I went to school and I bet if we confiscated the cell phones it would work now.

Re: Disturbing - What to do now?

Some of us are genetically pre-disposed to learn in a school environment. Others in a world/life environment. Still others learn well in both, and some learn well in neither.

Regardless of the genetic pre-disposition, a home environment that fosters and satisfies healthy curiosity, as well as a school environment that does the same will each maximize student achievement.

The good ole' USA is comparatively lacking in both types of environment. Our culture, probably more than any other, rewards traits which develop without a measure of self discipline, sacrifice, or long term commitment.

So, while many of our kids model the Kardashians and Lohans (with their parents looking on), the kids in India, China, South Korea, and others, model actual achievement.

Ask a kid what he sees himself doing in five or ten years. If he has an answer, listen closely to see whether it describes him "being" something or "doing" something. It's the kids who want to "do" who have a chance.

Well said and let us not forget we hopefully will again need workers across a vast spectrum of jobs. Not everyone is happy working with their brain.

Not everyone is happy working with their brain.
Only the people that want a job that pays more than minimum wage. Any job that requires you to learn a "skill" requires you to use your brain. There are only so many ditch digger jobs.
