I am getting ready to reinstall the distributor in the 470 and need a bit of advise on this one....the engine is at TDC so how do I align the distributor and what's the firing order?

Re: Distrubutor Alignment

dont know the firing order but for best option of setting timing almost perfect on firs shot is to rotate the engine to whatever timming deg it needs to be like a 140 is supposed to be at 6bdc so put your timing mark on your right degree and then take the dist cover off and adjust it so the points are just opening up and set that spot on your cap as number one cylinder. I do not know about the 470 but a 140 is 1342 and i believe it should be the same for your 470. then fine tune the timing once you get the engine running.

Re: Distrubutor Alignment

the engine is at TDC ................

Is it at TDC on the compression stroke? That you have to know. If not, your rotor will be 180? off.
If you were rebuilding the engine and the timing marks on the cam and crank are lined up correctly, you are NOT on the compression stroke, you are on the exhaust stroke.

Here is how to find #1 TDC on the compression (Firing) stroke. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=427081

TDC compression. The cap is marked as to which is the #1 wire. Put the cap on and make a mark on the side of the distributer body where the #1 wire is. Remove the cap and rotate the distributer until the rotor lines up with the mark. Since the distributer rotates clockwise you can rotate it a little CCW to advance it a bit (about 6 degrees). 1,3,4,2 as the Dr says.

Perhaps vince is refering to aligning the "oil pump". The tool that drops down thru the distributor that sets the position of the oil pump. Then the oil pump is torqed to spec.
