85 hp inline 4<br />I learned from an old thread that the rotor won't come off the shaft. 12 footer said you can clean up a pretty rough looking one and get service out of it, so that's what I'm going to do. I understand that the plug wires scew out of the cap but I can't get them to turn loose. I don't want to tear something up like I was about to do with the rotor, but the contacts need major cleaning. The inside of the cap looks like some body did a lot of welding then wet it down for good measure. Can some body tell me how to get the plug wires and especially the coil wire out of the cap. The 3 wires from the switch box to the upper part of the distributor feel rotten and I'd like to replace them, but I don't want to get it out of time. Any tips you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I have done about 10 years worth of neglected maintenance since November and I think I'm getting close. Every time I say that, something else pops up, but I AM gonna start crappie fishing in 2 weeks if I have to row the dern thing. Clymer is no help in this area and I have researched the old threads pretty well. Thanks ya'll.-G.

Grizzly, you can clean the cap relatively easily without takin the wires out of it...those wires are stainless core and DO NOT wear out like automotive wires....only reason to replace them is if a rat chewed on them...you obviously got the cap down, grab the jug of boat hull cleaner/lime away and pour a slug in the cap..let it sit a minute and rinse it out with water...it will look good..dont worry about erosion on the contacts, this is a seriously hot ignition, a little more air gap in the distributor wont hurt......those rotted dist. wires are a prob, you cant change the without replacing the dist body $300+...get some 'liquid tape' and re-insulate the wires...

Thanks ODD1, that lays it out well for me. I've had some time off due to shoulder surgurey-going back on Monday. Maybe I can finish the motor this weekend. Life is good! -G.

I have a 80hp Merc Inline 6cyl that also had pretty screwed up distributor/plug wires on it. The wires were beyond use so I just pulled them out of the distributor and unscrewed the ends with a flathead screw driver. If you need new wires go to www.vintageoutboards.com . The guy there should be able to get you some.
