Does it matter which post on the distributor cap #1 is on as long as all of the plugs are in firing order as they proceed around the cap?

Now I'm quite sure this is a dumb question. What's interesting is I'm not sure if it's dumb because, "of course it matters" or whether it is dumb because, "of course it doesn't matter". Looking forward to the answer. :)

it does not matter..........as long as the rotor inside the cap had been indexed to the proper position.....

but why not just put them where they are labeled to go?????

makes it easier n quicker to identify each cylinder if you are doing any troubleshooting

It does and it doesn't. It doesn't matter -- what franktrav says.

It does matter especially if you are using the factory plug wire set. They are cut to a certain length and intended to be plugged into a certain place in the cap and routed around the manifold a certain way. If you plug them into whatever spot on the cap, some wires will have too much slack and others will be stretched. It'll look like a rats nest and cuold develop a problem esp. with stretched wires or improperly routed wires, wires not secured properly.
