Dishwasher trouble

It was like a classic scene from Tom and Jerry when Jerry filled the kitchen floor with bubbles. It seemed like a never ending stream of bubbles flowed out of my dishwasher. What could be the problem? what should I be looking for? I have never messed with dishwasher before. BTW, the kitchen floor is really clean now since I had to mop the hell of it. :D

Sounds like someone used dawn instead of cascade in there. By the way, how old is the dishwasher?

It's old, more then 10yrs I think. Seemed it wasn't draining because there's good amount of standing water on the bottom after all the bubbles went away.

Well the drain usually runs to the kitchen sink drain. Check it and make sure it isnt clogged. Many times its attached to the garbage disposal which can drain slow. But you would have junk in the sink if that was the case.

Id have to agree with halas, sounds like the wrong soap to me. Automatic dishwashing soap doesnt bubble up.

Re: Dishwasher trouble

It sounds like the dishwasher drain hose doesn't have a loop in it above water height at the sink.

To simplify:

Take the drain hose and zip tie it up high so the hose is touching the underside of the counter top.

This keeps water from the sink (and soap too) from draining back into the dishwasher. Every dishwasher needs this or a vacuum breaker to work properly.

Dishwasher soap can't foam like that. It had to be dish soap infiltration either by mistake or through the drain.

Maybe if it was a new install, but nothing by the OP suggests that this is.
A teenager "helping out" with the dishes for the first time, they've just switched to liquid DW soap and mistook the liquid dish soap for the DW stuff, maybe they are as old as I am and just had a [ ok, enough of that! - editor]...:)

You'd be suprised how many calls I get in a year with the same symptoms mentioned above. It's almost always the hose has fallen down from where it was fastened. Garbage cans, buckets, etc. being taken in/ out all the time can eventually knock the hose loose. Most people don't realize that it needs to be up high and call a repairman- $50 or more bill for a 1 minute repair.

Had not thought of a sudden shift of the hose.
Easy enough to check, too!

Dishwasher trouble

I just give her a kiss and tell her I love her and no more troubles :p

Oh the mechanical one ;) Since it is 10 yo I would do some filter maintenance, check the hoses and use the proper soap.

Re: Dishwasher trouble

Just bought my house back in February. It was a foreclosure, and sat for a year and a half. When I reconnected the water, I had leaks EVERYWHERE including the dishwasher. I've got an older model (1980's) Whirlpool.. Found a TON of parts available online. Got the valve I needed for $20 and shipped to my door.

Re: Dishwasher trouble

check the drain hose for leak, or crack, may only leak when the washer is draining, mine cracked at the top of the bend, I went nuts finding it. 12 dollar hose at lowes. not, wasnt long enough, had to order one from maytag.

Re: Dishwasher trouble

Alright, Y'all got me! I did have a brain fart and didn't want to admit it. I moved into a rental house and this dishwasher haven't been in use for sometime and it was dirty so I thought I disinfect it before use. I did this while in the process of moving in. I used bleach in the closed cup and laundry detergent in the open cup since that were all I had at the time. DOH! I can understand the wrong soap caused the bubbles but what about the standing water? wouldn't it have been drained if everything (excluded the operator) worked properly?

Re: Dishwasher trouble

Umm perhaps the remaining water was held in the bubbles and they were there after the final drain cycle? Now that they have settled and popped the water is remaining?

Re: Dishwasher trouble

You need to run it through the drain part of the cycle again and see what happens. Have the mop ready !!!!

Id say this is correct. Hard to pump out bubbles.

Re: Dishwasher trouble

Dilute the soap residue with fresh water from a bucket poured into the bottom, then use a shop vac to empty it. Do this a few times, then run it through a full cycle. Should be fine.
