I'm running a 1998 22' aluminum Starcraft with a 4.3 liter engine, alpha 1 outdrive and 22 pitch prop on the ocean. Unlike some of the other posts on diseling mine does NOT disel if I've come off of a plane. Instead it disels when the ocean is rough and I have to trim the motor all the way down and plow to keep from being beaten to death. Would a lower pitch prop and perhaps trim tabs solve my problem?
Thanks.

You shure your not hearing detonation or pre-ignition? Put the highest octane fuel in it you can find and see if it goes away. Also check ign. timing. Run some decarb thru the engine such as Berryman's B12 from Wal Mart or Seafoam from your autoparts store.

Don,

The prop sounds a little bit too big. I suspect a 18" 4-blade or 19" 3-blade would be a better match. With the bow down and outdrive trimmed in the motor is going to work very hard and create the heat needed for the engine run-on trouble. The main causes are heat, poor fuel quality, high idle speed, and advanced timing.

Thanks Guys for the help. I forgot about the fuel. At Newport OR. where I had the problem the marina only sold 85 octane. Next summer I'll try a smaller prop and an octane booster.
