Disconnected VRO-Now no run. Unrelated

Hi guys, I have a 92 Johnson 70. I replaced the impeller and resealed the lower unit. Pulling the whole VRO unit, 2 bracket screws and the lines, made it easy to disconnect the shift linkage. Previous owner mixed his own oil and it looks like he just disconnected the electrical and started mixing his own.
Before I tore it down, it had old gas and wouldn't start. I drained the carb and shot lots of berryman carb cleaner up the drain hole as best as I could, fresh gas and it fired up pretty quick with a little choke, idled fine. Must have restarted it 10 times that day, no choke, fired right up instantly. W/P stream was fine but I noticed water leaking from behind the left rubber motor mount. Seemed odd and it was a new to me used motor so I wanted to go thru the lower unit anyway.
When I reassembled it I ran a line straight to the "manifold" that distributes gas to the 3 carbs via 3/16 line. I plugged the large port at the bottom of the intake manifold behind the carbs.
Now it won't start. Getting spark and fuel. Gonna research what that port I plugged was for. Maybe I shouldn't have plugged it but rerouted it? I can put the vro back on but may be a problem as I cut one of the preformed hoses for my current bypass routing needs.
Engine has low compression but should still run, at least it did before I started screwing around with it. LOL.
Thanks for any help.
Oh yeah, it goes on a 20' Gregor that I plan on fishing lake and inshore with my 11 year old on 9 year old twins. All boys.
I have a 14' Western also with a 25H Suzuki. Just went thru hell finding a replacement prop for my spun one. It is a rare 6 spline output shaft, but thats another story.....

If you removed the entire vroand did not replace it eith a fuel only fuel pump the engine is definitely not getting fuel. That large port is the pulse line that operates the fuel pump. Spraying carb cleaner into the float bowl dies little to clean the carb. It is the small internal passages and jets that need cleaning.
