I just made an interesting and useful discovery for disassembling any lower unit with a two piece drive shaft: You can put an old Evinrude 13 spline hub on the stub shaft. You can then put a pipe wrench on the hub and break free the pinion nut. Works great and you don't **** up the splines on the stub shaft. Of course, you still need to pack the gearcase with rags so the wrench on the pinion nut doesn't mar it.
So if you disassemble these lowers or intend to do so and don't want to spend the bucks for a special tool, find a junk 13 spline Evinrude prop and press out the hub.
