Dipstick vs Manual

After changing oil in my (new to me) '05 VP 5.0 GXi-E it appeared on the dipstick as way overfilled. The manual states 6 qts, which is what I put in. Also had tall oil filter. I removed some (1 qt) to put it into the safe on the dipstick. ....So does anyone know why there would be a discrepancy between the two??? And opinions on the correct one to follow?? TIA !

Apparently you didn't get most of the old oil out. Mine takes 6. 07 5.0 GXI-G

Thanks Thalasso. Yes, that thought crossed my mind too, and is probably the obvious answer i missed. You must not have trouble getting all of your oil out??

The manual tells you the capacity, often of an empty system. Your system wasn't empty and often they aren't. After you've done it enough, you'll get a better sense. Until then, measure what you get out and put that much in. Start it and check for leaks. Shut it off and check the level add as necessary

In fact if you get it all out it takes 6 1/2 qts with the large filter
