Guy's when I bought my boat, the motor which I since replaced had the wrong dip stick. I have the old stick in my reman. engine. It's too short. Since people use truck blocks for marine engines, will a Chevy truck w/350 dip stick work with my 350 merc. motor? Boat is a 1982 but the reman block is 79.

Re: Dip Stick

If I could not locate one that fits correctly, I would get one too long, drain the oil, then add qts until it got to the level of measuring distance, cut the tip off if needed and at 4 or 5 qts (whatever is it's normal level of full) then notch it at one qt and full. Understand?

What Glenn says!

At the boat manufacturing facility I worked at we would get engines in with the correct amount of oil. Since each builder installs their engine at a different angle, it was up to the manufacturer to mark the stick after installation. This was done on diesels with a capacity of 10 qts....I assume the same would be appropriate for your engine.

Good Luck!

Thanks Guy's! Bondo I don't know if it's a merc tube and it is a portside! The pan come off the 83 merc. 79 is the new raman. block.

You don't even know what side the dip stick is on?

Ayuh,... Donno whatcha got now...
An '83 starboard-side oil pan, Don't fit a portside dipstick '79 block...
Unless it's a "fit 'em both" aftermarket pan...

Next question,...
Is the dipstick pan mounted, or block mounted,..??

Re: Dip Stick

You can buy a universal dipstick at an auto supply store, such as Auto Zone or PEP Boys. Drain the engine; add the required amount of oil; and then set the adjustable slide on the dipstick to correctly measure the amount of oil in the engine. Simple and effective. Hy
