How do you know there is no leak? If that oil is milky after you changed it there has to be something that is making the water enter into the oil. Did it ever overheat??

The boat has never overheated. We bought the boat new around three years ago, and around two years ago the freeze plug in the manifold popped out. The boat runs fine though, and it does not appear that any water is getting to the plugs. There are no visible exteral leaks, so what else might the problem be?

Your block could have a crack in it between the coolant passages and an oil passage. Doesn't have to be getting into the cylinders.

Could also be your manifolds/risers. Was the oil level high?

The fact that a casting plug popped out tells me that you didn't properly winterize your boat so I am leaning toward the cracked block.

your correct the year the freeze plug pop out it was not winterized properly, but i ran it that whole summer, from other threads i've read i was wondering if its corect that if the manifold or riser was busted water would be on the plugs and it would not run correctly?

You might have some seriose crackage to the block from that one year friend.

seriose crackage
Um,

Yup....what he said!

and around two years ago the freeze plug in the manifold popped
That's not a "freeze" plug......unless you mean it's an "Evidence of FREEZE" plug!

Take the pushrod/lifter cover off and have a look inside there.....you may find some rusty cracks since you have let this thing go for all that time...

Your best bet for diagnosis will be to remove the manifold and pressurize the block to find the leak.....put a little detergent in the block and look for bubbles!

Sorry about that,

very con concerned you guys are right, would you go ahead and get a new engine, reman, or is there something else i can check, i take it you have ruled out the manifold or riser

You are jumping the gun jack rabbit. Pressure test your block first!

will try, really dont know how though, got any iseas what else it could possibly be, it just beats me with it running so good, not much of a mech
but i am listining to suggestions, sure dont want to jump the gun but dont want to blow the summer either, or blow un nessasary money. it seems its either riser manifold or block, correct? or is there domething else, sure need quidence

The only way to know is to pressure test or have it done.

When I was dating my wife she had an old Datsun. It ran fine, but the oil was always milky even after an oil change. Had a friend that was a mechanic and found out it was a blown head gasket. Had it resurfaced got gaskets put it all together and THEN it ran good. Don't assume that there is no problem because you think it is running fine. The evidence is there that there is a problem with something. Take it to a mechanic and have the block pressure tested. Then go from there.

How about just trying a good ole compression check for starters? You've got a compression gauge, right? You've only got 4 cylinders to check and one of them has a plug that looks different. I'd check that first since its easy and basically free if you've got the gauge. If you don't, you can rent one free from Advance Auto Parts or Autozone.

If you've got a blown head gasket, it'll probably show up with a bad reading on one cylinder or two adjacent cylinders if the gasket is blown between them. With one funny looking plug, it might just be a single cylinder.

A compression check is a complete waste of time when you suspect a cracked block.

The cooling system pressure check is the ONLY way to rule out a crack in the water jacket whether you have water in the oil or not.....

A compression check is a good thing to do ( but not for "starters".....) if you have other problems, like a blown head gasket.....but blown blown head gaskets are real common in marine engines and they usually do not cause water in the oil...

Water in the oil, in marine engines, (IN SPRING) are most frequently from freeze damage.

Re: dip stick oil looks great, change oil and it appears milky

going to do presure test monday, will follow up at that time, i really want to thank you guys for the help, i do suspect a cracked block, but will do the test first, and i suspect the block was cracked not this past winter but the previos winter, if that is what it is do you suggest a new one or a reman, and do you suggest a company to deal with
