It was my wife's birthday. She expressed a desire to have a little device that she could take upstairs and do email, play scrabble, surf the net, etc, etc. She wanted this in lieu of dragging her 17" laptop upstairs, every time she wanted to use it.

Sooooo, I bought her a little Acer Netbook. It was a cute little thing and was only $200. Knowing little about a lot of current stuff, and seeing all the tablets in the store. I wondered if I made the right choice. As a result, we have not opened the netbook package until it is determined if it was the right choice.

Subsequently I did see a netbook feature that made it kind of neat. You can actually use the Google Word Processor in the cloud, if you want to compose something. Other than maybe that, I doubt there would be any other computer type work that she would want to do.

I am just wanting to make sure that we won't be missing out on something, that we would soon long for, by keeping the netbook.

btw, she would be using the device on our wireless home network.

I bought the wife a Kindle Fire for Valentines day and now she is doing just about all of her stuff on it, including reading her books, she loves it. I just bought a Lenovo tablet and it does everything her kindle does plus more and I only paid $139 for it at best buy, both are great for stuff, she only uses her laptop now when doing work on someones website, other than that, she is pretty much switched over to the tablet.

An article in the local paper stated the prediction that Tablet sales would overtake Laptop sales within a fairly short period of time. That certainly shows a trend that Mrs MT has followed but operationally speaking, it seems the tablet schtick is a big leap from conventional laptop/netbook operation.

One has to measure when taking the leap to a new platform, if the effort is worth the, well, effort?

I have an iPad and use it primarily. The portability and ability to grab and go, without having to be in a typing position makes it very useful. Fr the use you mention, I would encourage a tablet. I am partial to the iPad, and would assume the mini would be just as good. It just works. I am in IT as a profession and sometimes you just want something to work as opposed to dinking with it.

The kindle, nook, or even the Asus transformer would be good choices as well. The Samsung galaxie tab is also good. The thing to think about here is the App Store you will have access to. Again, I prefer the apple App Store for variety, but the android store is nearly as good. The kindle store is down the list on availability of apps.

With my Lenovo, I have no problems with apps, between the built in ones as well as the google play, I have access to anything I want, including the fact that my tablet is also a GPS and has a 3G module built in for cell phone use if I want to purchase a plan, 1080p for movies and videos, it is an awesome little tablet, that can do far more than I can think of! I have also added memory through the micros SD slot, so I am pretty happy.

if you wont be transferring too much stuff from the tablet to other devices, I'd go with the kindle fire....but only if you root/rom it.

I've got one and for the prices they are fetching used off ebay/amazon, its a no-brainer for just goofing around with.

I rooted it and put on the AOKP rom and its literally now a dirt cheap droid tablet. I can surf anywhere I want online and have complete access to the droid app market so you dont have to use the stock kindle market that makes you pay $$ for apps.

plays all the newest games really nice too.

I do have the older AOKP rom on it that is kinda buggy with youtube and the web browser but the newer version fixes those issues. Just too lazy to update it haha.

Why go to all that trouble to root a kindle when you can get droid tablets for less than a hundred bucks now a days?

Our kids bought us a Samsung Galaxy for our anniversary. Took me awhile to get the hang of it, but Linda caught on right away. I figured out that its its operation is more like a smart phone (she owns one- I don't) than any PC. Once I realized I had to forget Windows to operate the thing, I caught on fast.

Actually, Linda has a Kindle Fire, too. I'll have to ask her what the differences are.

Seems like the Samsung might come in handy on the boat. My daughter got us a portable 'hot spot' for which she's paying the $10/month through Verizon, so I'll have access to real-time weather radar and such when we're bobbing around.
