Re: Diffirent Trailer Wiring Problem

Brake and signal lights are on the same wire. On a 5 wire connector the normal sequence is:

Black - common ground to the trailer
Green - Right rear brake/signal
Yellow - Left rear brake/signal
Brown - Park light/running lights

So at the rear turn signal housing you should have 2 wires and the light is grounded to the trailer. Get a test light and check for power. It sounds as if you have a broken wire. If you have power to it all check the bulbs and the sockets. Many times the sockets get corroded too.

Good luck.

Bob

What kind of vehicle are you using? Some of the newer prewired trucks have seperate fuses for the trailer lights, which I found out the hard way after chasing leads down all over the harness.

Re: Diffirent Trailer Wiring Problem

jrichardson88 - I'm having the exact same problem. I started to the lake this weekend with all lights working on my Skeeter trailer, but by the time I reached the lake I only had a right side turn signal and brake light. Found water in several lights -replaced all rear lights, now have all break lights and turn signals - but still no running lights. Oh, left side backup light still does not work and right side is dim. Anyone else got any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Diffirent Trailer Wiring Problem

With so many variables causing troubles with trailer lights, my first course of action is to get out the multimeter and start looking for voltage to every light starting from the front of the trailer to the back. Often my running lights are grounding out causing the trouble.I also find my main ground will cause all kinds of strange light combinations like partial lighting, no lighting, and flickering. Many times I find the main ground problem as I head down the road. The lights start doing different things as I drive. That usually tells me my hitch ball is acting as the only ground and the wire ground has failed. Reattaching the ground to clean metal usually cures it.

Had the same problem with my 16ft flatbed trailer. Turns out that a fuse in the truck had blown. 99 chevy new body style has fuses for all the trailer lights seperate. Get a test light and start at the plug on the back of the vehicle. Go from there. Works every time!

Think-GROUND, GROUND, GROUND. These have to be clean,

Do you have side marker lights that are working? If they are, you may have a bad wire going between the two rear lights.

Don't know your tow vehicle. Most factory tow harnesses are fused seperately in the vehicle.

Time to get out the least read book in the world-the owners manual.
