If you post a pic someone can probably help you.I can't get the top cowl off a 90 hp 2006 merc 2 stroke. The book only mentions a rear latching device, but it doesn't seem to do anything when I turn the latch. Any ideas?
Thanks for your response. I tried placing a block of wood under the lip of the cowl and struck it with a hammer but was tentative to really hit it. I'll try putting a little tension on it while giving it a good solid rap. I better order some touch-up paint. If you mean to motor cover, sometimes the rubber seal between the cover and the lower cowling sticks and you have to give a very sharp tap to get it to come loose. 2 stoke oil on some rubbers seems to act like an adhesive, you could almost pull your shoulder out of the socket just yanking on a stuck cover.
Good point, my first experience with iboats and I could have prepared better. ThanksIf you post a pic someone can probably help you.
Thanks guys, I got it off. I attached a racheted tie down to an overhead beam and then attached the hook to the hand hold. Had to put a fair air amount of tension on it while I it with my hand. I'll be sure to clean and lubricate it next time. Thanks again.I have an '02 90; guess the same hood. My opening lever at the rear of the engine is horizontal when latched and the left (port) side drops to vertical when open. It usually takes a fair amount of force to move it. I use the heel of my hand to hit the top rear of the hood just above the hand hold slot. If you have the lever in the open position, and attempt to lift from the rear, there is nothing but the seal-to-hood interface stopping you as Charlie said.
I clean off the rubber with a solvent and then spray silicon (ww has it in the auto parts section, red and white can) on the rubber and it helps a lot.
