I'm having some trouble getting the lower unit off my 2003 Johnson 25 hp. Trying to do this to remove the water pump housing on this motor. I got it to drop down an inch or so but cant find any way to release the shift rod. Stupidly I removed the connection behind the plastic intake screens and got the lower unit off but still need to get the rod off so I can remove the water pump parts. Getting pretty frustrated. I have read that the screw I need to loosen may be in the engine compartment somewhere but I don't see anything that looks like it would do it. I have attached a link to the drawings for my motor, in case that helps. Thanks in advance!

Where you separated the linkage, lift the top connector, there is a little plastic keeper(its split) remove it (keep your eye on it it likes to fly) the nut can now be removed, the gearcase will now come down. Clean that shaft with some scotch brite etc. so it can slide easily, assembly is just opposite.

Ok great I get the idea now I think. Is the keeper actually under the threaded end connecter? Do I need to tap the piece up to expose it? Sorry I've never seen one like this before.
