different year lower end unit Compatibility

Hello to everyone and I am learning so much on this site, thanks to all. So I have just purchased a 1963 crestliner with a 1966 60hp Johnson vxl-12R, not sure what the R stands for. I'm looking on ebay at a lower end unit that is a long shaft 65hp for a 1968. Does anyone know if it's compatibile???? Thanks again.

I have a 70 HP 1986 Johnson outboard. Will a 1973 60 hp lower unit be compatible with it?
