It is a pressure tank as evidenced by the gauge and the pump plunger next to the right side of the handle. The two hoses are also a tip off. You connect the fuel line to the engine. You push the plunger to build pressure in the tank. You then start the engine. Puressure pulses from the engine go down the pressure line to the tank which is not vented (sealed). Pressure in the tank forces fuel up the other line to the carb. Obviously a leaky tank won't pressure and is a fire hazard. Rochester did make carburetors and fuel injection systems (for the 1957 Chevy for example). Since this tank is fuel related, it is possible they are one and the same company.

You have one of the early pressure tanks used by Evinrude and Johnson motors, 1949-50 ish. Commonly referred to as the Tall Boy Tank, or the Suitcase Tank.

Pumping the plunger does not pressurize the tank, it fills the carburetor so you can start the motor. Once running, the motor pumps air into the tank to pressurize it. Pressure in the tank then pushes fuel to the carb to keep it running. They are NOT any more dangerous than any other fuel tank.

Rochester also makes gauges. But they didn't make the tank.

thanks guys, just didnt know if it was an omc tank, or something else just converted to a dual line omc connecter. hopefully it will still hold pressure, so i can use it on one of my three dual line motors.

Tanks that old rarely work any more. The gaskets deteriorate badly and the hoses usually are disintegrated. All it takes to seal it are 3 gaskets and 2 o-rings. The "kit" costs only a few bucks and you can buy one at laingsoutboards.com. He also sells dual line hose at a coupleabucks per foot.

Suitcase tanks are on the rare side. Well worth the money to restore it.

I'd have to see a pic to know what you're talking about. Doesn't show up on the ones you posted before. Does it go all the way thru?

It's been 40 years since I've looked at one of those, but I would assume you are looking at the overpressure relief valve hole. #19 is the relief valve. There has to be a hole for the air to blow out of, if it opens.

that exploded view (pardon the expression for pressure tanks! lol) is greatly apreciated. it does look like 19 in the parts list. its directly between the fuel and air line. i will find the camera and post back.

thanks guys!

#19 is part of the plunger to prime the carb. I had to go out and look at my tank again to see if there is a hole. There is none. Now if you mean the elevated fitting between the fuel and air line, that's the fuel shutoff - #16 on the diagram. All it is is a needle valve. Must not be too durable because mine has a penny brazed to the shaft as the handle. A wheatie too!

DSCF1661.jpgDSCF1662.jpghere are pics of the above mentioned vacant hole, and the raised fitting slightly above and to the right....is a relief valve?

Its a bolt hole for part nos 14 and 15. A round head bolt goes there to hold part 23 to the top of the tank.

Same thread as bolts # 22, but about 1/4" longer. Look at gasket # 41. Its the hole that's offset from the corner.

The raised fitting is the gas shutoff. All you have left of that is the shaft. The handle on the top is broken off.
