Looking at new Yamaha 4 Stroke and dealer has new, in-box 200 HP in model years 2003, 2004, and 2005 with approx $800 difference in prices (older being the cheapest). Does anyone know of any particular changes in the models from year to year? As they are all new, they all come with the 3 year warranty. Can't find any site which describes differences in model year so any help would be much appreciated.

Most of the changes were not noticable over the years. All the motors, except late production '04's and the 2005's, will need the safety recall on the throttle bushings performed. Some motors had regulator problems and there was a recall for those, according to serial number range. Also some had vapor lock problems and there was a service bulletin about those and a kit that had to be installed. Go thru all the service bulletins with your dealer if you purchase an older model.

Only the 2004 and 2005 motors achieved the California 3-star ultra-low emission rating. The earlier models were 2-star rated just like many new 2-strokes are, if that matters to you.

Thanks very much Seahorse. Do you know on the EFI's for over those years? Just found out that my dealer had incorrectly thought I had a 25", when I have a 20" which knocks me out of the 4-strokes, so I'm back to the EFI's! He has those in the same model years as well. Sounds like the newest would be 2 star.

What years in particular and are you talking about Vmax models or standard models?

spoonbill,
Get this and You can use a long shaft 225 hp 4-stroke on your 20 inch transom:
http://www.thmarine.com/product.cfm?PRID=22

Maybe the 2004 Yamaha 4-stroke (to get the 3-star emission rating) and get as much extra warranty You can get (Y.E.S.).

I have a Yamaha F115 4-stroke(2003) myself and it works fine so far (I have 5 year warranty on it).
/Bo
Looking at the 2003, '04, '05 VX200. I think the VMax models are the VZ200. I was trying to stay away from the HPDI issues, which I believe is the VZ200.

Not sure on the jack plate extension as I have a bay boat and use my adjustable jack plate frequently.
