Differences in 2-cycle oils?

Have been reading several threads on whether there are differences between the various brands of TC-W3 oils and talked to local boating places. Most everything I've read/heard is opinion ... haven't seen/heard much facts/test results. Too much conflicting "advice" to be really helpful & I'm more confused now than when I started. I can't always get Yamaha brand oil (I have a 2000 Yamaha 150HP), don't want to risk an expensive motor on cheap inadequate oil, and the contraditory advice I've heard/read tells me:

1) I should stick to Yamaha brand because they specify unique additives in addition to meeting TC-W3 requirements;
2) Any oil from an engine manufacturer should be OK because they all use comparable additives, but stay away from refinery/store brand oils because they meet minimum TC-W3 requirements, don't include additives, or include parafin in their recipe;
3) Penzoil Synthetic is as good as it gets. The non-synthetic Penzoil marine is the same oil used by the engine companies and is far better than Lubrimatic or WalMart brands;
4) It's OK to mix synthetic & non-synthetic oil and I should never mix synthetic & non-synthetic oils.
5) Penzoil makes the WalMart brand oil & the 2 oils are the same.

Does anyone know the "facts" or a place to look?Help,please ... the topic seems so popular that I'm sure others would appreciate also. Thanks much.

Re: Differences in 2-cycle oils?

An oil test was done by Bass and Walleye Boats magazine back in Aug. 2000. Their lab tests showed that manufacturer's and aftermarket oils had different formulas, except that Exxon and WalMart were the same. Outboard companies use oil formulas that cannot be used by anyone else.
