differences between mercruiser carburetors.

What is the actual difference between merc carb 1389-9564 which is used on pre 1983 3 liter (140 hp)and 3.7 liter (165 hp) and the 1389-9350 which is used on 1984 and up to 2001 140 3 liter engines?

Ayuh,.... I donno, but My WAGuess is, maybe they went from choke stoves, to electric chokes,....??.....

Have ya tried findin' pictures of 'em at some Mercruiser parts look-up sites,..??
Most of those images are quite clear, 'n accurate,....

Both of them have electric chokes,that's not it. I'll try to check the mercruiser parts lookup sites.

I just got too restless and "solved " my problem by buying the carburetor that the manual calls for.
Oh well, at least I can blame cabin fever.

One difference is the linkage design and the other is the fuel pump overflow tube. Also there's a possibility that the Venturi Cluster or jet sizes are a little different. Some of the jets were between 1.45 up to 1.65mm looking in the service manuals, etc.

I did what you suggested and found out that everything,including the throat is a little bit larger on the 9564. The lady at Flying fish also told me that the 9564 is for 3 and 3.7 liter while the 9350 is for 2.5 and 3 liter engines.
