What are the differences in between a 5.7 l & lx? I am assuming the l has a 2 barrel Carb instead of the quadrajet 4 barrel, but what else? Its a 40 HP difference?

Regardless I am glad I have the lx :)

Ayuh,... The basic difference between a 5.7l, 'n a 5.7LX is the LX is a 4bbl carb...
But,..
With that said, yer question is Much to Vague to really answer....

Re: difference inbetween 5.7l & 5.7lx

When I did the 2bbl to 4bbl swap on my 1997 5.7 I looked up the 2 motors side by side. The parts I found that were different were, Intake Manifold, Carburetor, Flame Suppressor(air cleaner), Fuel line that goes from the carb to the fuel pump, and the throttle bracket. Merc used a quadrajet and a Weber carb in the 90's. The Weber is just like the Edelbrock 1409, which is what I installed. Internally, the engine is the same. At least in 97. Also, I am 90% sure when reading, my outdrive was a 1.62 ratio, where the 4bbl has the 1.47 ratio

Thanks I figured everything would have been different from the air and feul, but didn't even think about the drive ratio. That explains to me why some folks are using Different pitch props on what appears to be the same boat with these different 350's.

And just to confuse you all even more. My 1997 mercruiser 5.7 was called (drumfoll please)... "5.7LX EFI GEN +" So it's an LX with NO carburetor! Kinda shoots that L v LX as strictly being 2bb v 4bbl, doesn't it?

The one with more letters behind the name is always the better / more optioned / more expensive one. I guess every letter adds at least 10hp and 10% to the price. ;)

Tilliam, your 5.7 LX EFI gen+ would also have the vortec heads, different from the ones I would have. They make more power. There are so many 5.7's in the 90's it is hard to keep track

Lol now that one I get! Is it throttle body injection? I would love fuel injection on mine...

Yes, the 5.7LX EFI Gen+ was throttle body injected, has Vortec heads, a roller cam, and was rated at 280hp. It was offered ONLY in 1996 and 1997.

To mix it up even more, there is a 2bbl throttle body lx efi gen+ and also a 4bbl throttle body lx efi in 1996 and 1997.
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/sele...nbr=5.7LX+EFI++(4+BBL.-TBI)++GM+350+V-8++1997

When I researched it, the shortblocks looked mostly the same with all the 5.7 in those years, internally. Although they show a flat tappet cam, or the roller. I know my 1997 5.7 with the 2bbl carb has the roller, as I noticed it during my intake change. The main differences were in the heads, and intake/fuel deliver combos. And there were alot of combos.lol

Re: difference inbetween 5.7l & 5.7lx

You are right on showing the same throttle body, but it shows two different intakes. One intake is a 2bbl intake and one is a 4bbl intake

http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/us/parts-search.html#mr1461ar15811

They are showing different linkages also, and on the 4bbl one they list, it has a adapter plate to a 4bbl intake, as viewable in the one of the three links, but it is a a 2bbl throttle body. It must be they offered it with either a 2bbl intake as in this pic

http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/us/parts-search.html#mr1461ar15798

Or they show a high rise intake, which is a 4 bbl with a adapter to a 2bbl tbi unit. You can see the 4bbl gasket under the adapter plate

http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/us/parts-search.html#mr1461ar15799

I am wondering why the used to different intakes for the same throttle body. Maybe the 4bbl intake flows better? Or maybe to use up old stock. Who knows.
