Difference between rectifier and regulator/rectifier

I started a rebuild on my 1988 Evinrude 90 a year ago, got busy, and didn't finish the rebuild until last week. Somewhere along the way, I lost the regulator/rectifier. According to this page and to my local parts supply house, they show both a rectifier part no. 66 and a regulator/rectifier part no. 59 http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/46497.cfm.

The rectifier is $32 versus $100+ for the regulator/rectifier. I realize my engine come with a regulator/rectifier, but can I get by with just a rectifier and save the cash or do I need to go with a regulator/rectifier?

BTW, I have power trim and tilt

Thanks in advance.

Re: Difference between rectifier and regulator/rectifier

The diagram shows both because it also takes in the 88hp model which uses the rectifier only. The 90hp is equipped with the voltage regulator/rectifier assembly. There are two (2) different stators.... a 6amp model and a 9amp model. The 9amp stator is standard equipment for the engines having PTT.

I assume you have the 9amp stator BUT a part number would be needed to be sure. Normally that number is on the stator somewhere.

Bottom line...... You can use the small standard rectifier with either the 6amp or 9amp stator BUT you would want to have a volt gauge on your dash to keep track of the battery voltage which would be unregulated and could climb up into the 16v plus area. You would need some sort of electrical equipment handy to turn on to drop that voltage level... 14.5v is normally as high as you want it to go.

Personally, I've never been able to lose something as large as a voltage regulator/rectifier. How did you manage to do that?

Thanks Joe, that was very lucid. I can lose anything if I try hard enough.
