Difference between Mercruiser & OMC?

I have always wandered what is the difference between the Mercrusier 3.0L and OMC 3.0L? Dont they both use GMC motors, just different outdrives? Such as mine has a Cobra outdrive. Also if there are any differences which one is better? Thanks in advance

I've worked on both, you're right, they're the same engines. As far as the outdrives are concerned, Mercruiser is still in business, OMC was bought by someone else?? OMC parts are still available, I don't know to what extent though.

Tothe best of my knowledge Bombardier bought the parts division of OMC. Parts are still readily available.

Yes I think you are correct on that one, I have noticed there name on the parts that I had to purchase. And everything so far that I have bought has been reasonably priced too. Any one else know any pros and cons of mercruiser vs. cobra outdrives?

Well most have heard of the shifting problems that Cobras have had, because of the defective transom shift cables, and that lead to many ruined gear sets. When they are adjusted right, with the updated cable, they shift just fine. An advantage is that the impeller in the upper gear case is very easy to change, and that is a common sterndrive maintenance job. Merc Alpha you have to drop the lower unit. Biggest disadvantage of the OMC Cobra is the bad rap becasue of the cable/shifting problems will lower your boat's resale relative to a similar boat with a Merc. It can be hard to find a shop who knows them and will work on them also. So far I am happy with mine, however.

OMC's sterndrive group became part of Volvo. I believe the King Cobra is very close to the Volvo SX drive.
