I did a search and didnt see anything posted about this topic.
My question is what is the difference between a marine starter and a non-marine starter? Is it a big mistake to use a regular starter?
Thanks in advance

The BIG difference that I am aware of is that marine starters incorporate spark arresting screens to minimize the chance of igniting fuel vapor in the enngine compartment. I'd spend the extra dough to protect my investment...

Marine has a sealed solenoid contact cover and a seal on the srmature behind the drive gear shift lever housing. These all isolate the "sparky bits" against any fumes getting into those components.
Most auto starters are not very well sealed at the best of time.

Peter

I believe that the biggest difference is that a marine starter has permanent magnet fields as opposed to electro-magnets which can short out and make the housing glow red. A high performance gear reduction starter with permanent magnet motor should be safe but will probably not be accepted by insurance companies if boat burned down for some other reason.

How can i tell if mine is a marine starter. It seized up last season so opened it up and rebuilt it. It works perfect now but i never noticed anything dirrerant from an auto starter.

Should have had a tag on it SAE J-1171 (I thinks that's it) which is the marine approved sticker.
