Difference between Kodiak and Tie Down Disc Brakes?

I am looking to completely overhaul the brakes on a 2-axle Magic Tilt trailer. I've decided to go with disc brakes and have been looking at options. <br /><br />So far, the Tie Down brakes seem to be the best deal at ~$120 per wheel. I've found the Kodiak brakes locally for $340.00 for 2 wheels. I'm curious as to pros/cons/differences between the two brands.<br /><br />Trailer will mainly be used in salt water and probably infrequently (I have a slip). <br /><br />Thanks for the help,<br />Zett

vzett<br /> I am no expert- heck I don't even have trailer brakes but I have been looking into this trailer brake thing very carefully and it seems that Tie Down brakes do not enjoy a good reputation whereas Kodiak are well thought of. F.W.I.W, I am going with Kodiak discs with an electric/hydraulic actuator and a Tekonsha controller....unless someone tells me not to!...W

I have had both on this trailer.<br />Both of them will burn up if left on (either through a huge downhill w/surge or from a stupid human intervention - ooops)<br /><br />The tiedown are the weaker of the two setups. The disk material is 1/4" plate stainless. It appears to have been cut from a sheet and bolted to the hub. No vents, not much material to absorb heat. The calipers are just fine although they are a bolt together style - not cast as a single piece.<br /><br /><br />The kodiak brakes are vented disk brakes like the front of your car. Heavy duty and beefy. The disk/hub is a single casting. I bought the etec coated cast iron. This is the least expensive setup from Kodiak.<br /><br />Cost was about $230, so only a few bucks more than the tie down version.
