I'm sure this has been asked before but I couldn't find it in a search..

What's the difference between Evinrude and Johnson? From what I gather, they are both made by OMC and use mostely the same parts..or at least a lot of the parts are interchangable Correct? If so, what's the difference?

Re: Difference between Evinrude and Johnson

Starting in the 1950s, Johnson and Evinrude were basically the same product with different paint. A few years before OMC went bankrupt in the late 1990s, the Johnson line remained the same while the Evinrude line started in the direction of environmentally friendly models. Time will tell what Bombardier does with them down the road.

In 1999 Evinrude became the hi-tech outboard with FICHT and now E-TEC and Johnson remained the traditional economical carbureted 2-stroke. In 2002 when Bombardier took over, the Johnson line also included 4-strokes, now up to 225hp.

I know this is a stupid question that doesn't really matter, but what was the reason they decided to make Evinrude go the high tech way and leave Johnson traditional and not the other way around? Was it just a flip of the coin or something else?

The way it was explained, Evinrude had the highest name recognition of all outboards.

I heard from a rep once,(along time ago), that when they came down the line, if they started on the first crank, they painted them blue ;) .
I guess that wouldn't apply anymore.

Dave

Hah! DHadley posted same thing a ways back. Another good one was asking if a poster ("30psi compression on a fresh rebuild") got the crossflow pistons in facing the wrong way.
