Difference between Carb problem and Idle problems??

I am currently running a '79 Evinrude 100hp. Although it's old it has been running great, but recently the trim quit working. After taking the motor off and removing the trim unit, I managed to fix it by taking it apart and cleaning it. BUT in order to do this I had to detatch my throttle cables from the engine (to get the engine off without taking off the throttle) Since I've put it back together, I've been having troubles with low running speeds. It runs great at high speeds, but when cruising slowly (trolling speed) it coughs, sneezes and eventually quits. ALSO when I go to switch from forward to reverse or even neutral to forward, it instantly quits unless I have it idling high enough then QUICKLY slam it into forward which causes and pretty rough start.

Is this a problem I am having with my carbs running too lean or being too dirty or do you think I have changed my idle speed while playing around with disconnecting the throttle cables from the engine?

Let me know, I gotta go out there soon!

You've just described the problem one would encounter with a engine with fouled carburetors. Remove both carburetors and clean and rebuild them. Simply removing and replacing the throttle cable would not affect the engine.

Note that it was not necessary to remove the engine from the boat in order to remove the PTT assy. If the transom brackets were the type that would prevent the PTT unit from being removed, the precedure would be to have the engine at an extreme raised (and blocked) position, then simply remove the bolts brom the port transom bracket and slide it sideways, out of the way.

Yea I know it was possible but there were other reasons for removing the engine as well, that aside, would having my idle speed set TOO LOW also mimic the symptoms of fouled carbs?

Has it been sitting for any length of time? Like all winter?

yes it has sat all winter but it was also giving me this trouble last season before I put it away. It basically started as soon as I fixed the trim.

Any thoughts?

Re: Difference between Carb problem and Idle problems??

ok great, one other quick question. I recently changed my plugs. I did this by removing the old plugs and trying to match them exacly, problem is, there is no match for these plugs, they are not what the engine is supposed to be running, so I checked the manual and bought the proper plugs for the engine. But the engine doesn't seem to like these new plugs, it causes the engine to quit between gears, as I mentioned before. YET if I put the old plugs back in, the cutting out between gears does not happen anymore.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like when you get done with the carbs you need to go to the link n sync part of the manual and follow it step by step.
