My dad just bought a 4hp 4-stroke. Is there a way to convert it to 5hp or 6hp by changing out a few parts or something? It looks like they are all basically the same engine...

That's an "urban legend" that could be true in a few 2-stokes but is not very likely in 4-strokes. There could be different bore sizes, different strokes, different camshafts, carbs etc. Even when it can be done it's usually too expensive to make it worthwhile.

Chas.

My understanding is that your Mercury 4hp is made by Tohatsu. Look under the Tohatsu forums and you'll find information on upgrading your motor to a higher horsepower. Good luck! Keep us posted.

My dad found out last week that it was made by Tohatsu so he returned it, ha.
