Well after a lot of soul searching ive decided to purchase a new boat motor and put my 1972 20 johnson and 1965 25 evinrude out to pasture.Ive decided to go tohatsu. But what i was wondering what is the difference between a 25 and 30? The specs show they have the same bore and cubic inches. The rpm was different as well as the price. Is the difference in the jets in carb or do they even have carbs any more. Also do they sale kits that up grade a tiller steer and electric start to remote?Im thinking about buying a tiller steer and up grading later when i can afford it.Also have they had good luck with these new 4 strokes? I would hate to buy one to find out later they have a lot of trouble because there new and all the bugs have not been worked out. Thanks Wes tanner

Don't take what I say as gospel, but I've asked the same questions about larger outboards. I was told it has to do with the carb jets (yes they have carbs) and ignition timing. They advance it, from what I'm told. I'm sure there are several other tweaks they can do. The RPM is the main difference, as far as tangible differences between the two.

Take a look at the 20hp Johnson all the way up to the 35. The bore and stroke are the same, as is the weight. The engine is identical, the difference is the RPM. A little RPM can make a huge difference in the ponys at the propshaft.

Yeah I think this is right. The carb bore may be larger on the 30 newer motors. The older ones , Tohatsu 25 1993 year I had was the same as the 30. The difference was the throttle was not opened 100 %. Under the throttle handle was a removable clip that gave the motor about 500 more RPM. A big difference at the prop shaft. Hope this helps. Thanks...

5 years ago (you did notice that you replied to a 5yo post, right?) the MFS25 and MFS30 were carbed, but today they are EFI. Primary difference is in the ECU.

As PVANV said, The newer (post 2005?) 25 and 30's are fuel injected. No carbs. The difference is in the computer and other places. it's been well covered here and it is a MAJOR expence to upgrade latter.
FWIW, I bougth a 09 30 ( for my 16' Mirrocraft outfitter) as it was only 300 more than the 25 and the same weight. THis sis a heavy motor as compared to your old 25 so the extra HP will be welcome.
