'86 Volvo TAMD41A.

Finally got the starboard engine to stop overheating :) and took it out for a weekend run with the wife and kiddos. Ran it at higher RPM's (3300, while 3800 is WOT) than it had probably run in a long time. Now the port engine is blowing oil out the crankcase vent  . Any idea what could be causing so much backpressure to be blowing oil out the filter? please be something simple, please be something simple...

<crosses fingers and thinks good happy thoughts>

have heard this can happen if overfilled with oil, dont forget that as the boat planes the bow lifts and the oil level as in position changes, might be worth a think

Re: diesel question (oil coming out crankcase filter)

Is it blowing out just oil? Or a mixture of exhaust gases and oil? If it's the former it could very well be that's it's been overfilled, although in that case it would more likely blow oil out of the dipstick hole. If it's the latter, I'm afraid that's a bit of bad news because it's a clear indication that compression is bypassing the piston rings. If it came on suddenly, most probably it's broken rings on one or more pistons.
Good luck!
Maurice

Wonko,

There could be several scenarios here.

1. Worst case-"blow by", caused by broken rings, worn cylinders, etc.

2. Clogged intake area. Air filter?

3. Overfill of oil.

4. Wrong type of oil-foaming.

Is this engine turbocharged? If so, the wastegate could be venting to the crankcase.
