Don't know about a forum, but what do you want to know and what kind of diesel are you trying to get running. What is it's dormant history and prior to that, active history.

Re: Diesel Forum

I am trying to get a pair of Cummins Diesels started. They are D221's 230hp, built in 1977, v8 engines. They have sat in an enclosed storage for a few years. They ran well prior to that. Removed from an old boat.

Where can I find a shop manual for them?

Any suggestions in a way to try to get them to crank over & start?

thanks...

Re: Diesel Forum

Well lets start with the manual, order it through a cummins dealer or try ebay.
Starting an old diesel, mount engine good so it wont move around once it starts, find away to get water into the block for cooling, fuel line to mech/elec pump and return line to fuel tank from injector pump, the only places "I think" you will need power is to the fuel shut off solinoid and the starter, you will need a big deep cycle battery to turn over these motors.
so once you have wired yourself up to open the solinoid and turn over the motors, crack the tops of the injectors and turn it over till fuel comes out, this way you have no air in the injector pump, "this is best a two man job" saftey, safety, safety.
Cross your fingers and turn it over, its going to be loud if there is no exhaust manifold so dont run it long.
what did I miss, NEXT :D

Dang good procedure there although I would want to pressure lube the entire system. Going to be a crap shoot. Oh and Cummins are not pump and line systems so there may be another way to "bleed" out the injectors. CAT guy here, so I don't know . . .
